Tobacco usage among high school children is becoming a serious problem in developing countries. The early age of initiation underscores the urgent need to intervene and protect this vulnerable group from becoming the victims of addiction. A cross-sectional study was designed and data on tobacco knowledge, attitude and usage was collected from 200 students aged 15-16 years studying in government and private schools of Trichy district using a self-administered closed ended questionnaire. A Pretested structured questionnaire with 23 questions were distributed to assess the knowledge, attitude and prevalence of tobacco usage among government and private high school children. Though 78% of government school children and 72% of private school children had better knowledge about tobacco consumption, 8% of government school children and 5% of private school children were users of tobacco . Chi-square tests were used to determine the association of knowledge, attitude and practice of tobacco among government and private school children; however, it was not found statistically significant. The study suggests though the knowledge of government school children toward tobacco consumption is adequate, tobacco consumption habit is higher in government students than private school children.
