Knowledge and Awareness on the Application of 3D printing in Endodontics

Author: RESHMA THIRUNAVAKARASU, MANISH RANJAN
Abstract: A successful endodontic treatment requires a better understanding of the internal tooth morphology including the root canal system. Endodontic procedures such as access opening, canal shaping and cleaning, and obturation can be done easily. Recent advances in digital technology and their application to dentistry there have been the introduction of various devices or tools that may be used to improve teaching and management of various treatment procedures. The term 3D printing is generally used to describe a manufacturing approach which builds objects one layer at a time. Thus the aim of the study is to determine the level of knowledge and awareness regarding 3D printing used in endodontics. A cross-sectional survey was conducted. A questionnaire containing 9 questions was prepared on the knowledge and awareness of 3D printing. The questionnaire was shared with undergraduate dental students. It was found that between males and females, the students were aware of the application of 3D printing being used in dentistry (40% and 35% respectively). The level of awareness of students regarding whether they were aware of guided access between males and females were found to be 34% and 30% respectively. Thus the overall awareness regarding 3D printing application in endodontics among dental students was good. Dental students can gain further knowledge regarding 3D printing as it will become useful to them in the near future.
