Knowledge, Awareness And Treatment Options For Gingival Pigmentation- A Survey

Author: HEMASHREE J, KAARTHIKEYAN G
Abstract: A beautiful and a pleasing smile surely enhances a person’s self-confidence and self esteem . The beauty of a smile is attributed to the shape, colour, and position of the teeth in conjunction with the gingiva. This study aimed at assessing the knowledge, awareness and treatment options for gingival hyperpigmentation among patients visiting Saveetha Dental College. The study was done in an institutional setting among the Chennai population. The sample size of 150 participants who belonged to the age group 20-26 years , both males and females were selected by a convenience sampling method. Both descriptive (frequency of the responses) and inferential statistics (Chi - square tests) were done and the results were presented in the forms of graphs. The results inferred in the study is as follows. Among the study participants,56.67% of the patients belonged to the age group 20-23 years whereas 43.33% of the patients belonged to the age group 24-26 years. 66.67% of the females participated in the study and the rest were males. It was noted that only 29.33% of the study participants were aware of the term gingival depigmentation whereas 70.67% were not aware of it. Within the limitations of the current survey it is noticed that there is not much awareness of gingival depigmentation treatment protocols. Further awareness programmes need to be conducted among young adults regarding gingival depigmentation.
