Author: U.GANAPATHY SANKAR, MONISHA.R
Abstract: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a huge burden in India and it inculcates individuals with profound mental retardation. It is a neuro-developmental syndrome with deficits in social reciprocity and announcement, and by odd constrained, recurring behaviors. It manifests in the primary little years of life. Majority of the researchers points towards enhancing the greater public awareness on ASD and elaborated on the characteristic features displayed by children with ASD at early years. Research on ASD incorporates children, who likely to have a diagnosis of ASD or with the histories of special needs or developmental delays. There is evidence of relations between ASD and supplementary developmental disorders as well as association with specific medical conditions. Studies on autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) is always confined to a specific location and setting. The present study is the prevalence study conducted in populations of Mudichur village in India. This cross sectional survey was conducted with door to door survey of children with ASD. This study was conducted covering children in the age group of 5–10 years of age across Mudichur populations. Indian Scale for Assessment of Autism was used to identify the suspects of ASD. 10 children out of a total of 100 children of the age 5–10 years were diagnosed as cases of ASD. Further studies should target the tribal and rural areas. Male children were reported to have a higher risk of getting diagnosed as autism. Estimates on true prevalence of ASD in India are mandatory to inculcate policies and programmes for children with developmental disabilities.
