Author: SHALINI SATHIYAMOORTHY, MEBIN GEORGE MATHEW
Abstract: Dental caries is the most common type of oral health problem globally. Despite credible scientific advances and the fact that caries is preventable, the disease continues to be a major public health problem. In developing countries, changing lifestyles and dietary patterns are markedly increasing the incidence of caries. The prevalence of dental caries was associated with oral hygiene practice, sugar consumption and implementation of the preventive oral health program. The aim of the study is to assess the prevalence of dental caries in school going children in the age group of 5 - 14 years using the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS II). The retrospective study was conducted in a university hospital setting, among 100 school children of Chennai in the Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry in December 2019. The study was conducted between the age group of 5 - 14 years. Each student was examined intraorally by using the ICDAS system. This data was entered in the Excel sheet for tabulation and SPSS importing was done, Chi - Square association test was performed. 25.25% of females were highly prevalent in code 2. The highest coding percentage was seen in code 2 and females were highly prevalent which showed p value = 0.354 (p>0.05) (not significant). Age group of 5-8 years had the highest prevalence of dental caries (23%) which showed p value = 0.354 (p>0.05) (not significant).Within the limitations of the study age group of 5-8 years were highly prevalent to dental caries. The surfaces with early caries lesion (ICDAS code 2) are more common in the surveyed population.
