Smoking Prevalence and Behaviour among College Students in Chennai - A Survey based study.

Abstract: Smoking is an addictive disease. Smoking is a harmful hazard that causes respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, chronic bronchitis and lung cancer. According to the World Health Organisation, smoking causes annually 6 million deaths worldwide and is projected to exceed 8 million by 2030. It is an important cause of preventable morbidity and premature death. The aim of the study is to estimate the Prevalence, and behaviour of smoking among college students in Chennai.This is a cross sectional study which was conducted among 300 college students in Chennai. A validated and structured questionnaire containing 12 questions was framed and it was circulated through an online forum and the data was collected and the result was calculated statistically.In this study it was found that 27 % of college students were smokers although they were aware about the hazards of smoking.
