Background :Tympanic plate is the thin body plate anterior to the external auditory meatus , separating it from the condyle. It is an important anatomic structure because of its critical neurovascular relation to the base of the cranium and otologic structures and proximity to the temporomandibular joint.Mandibular fossa is an oval depression behind the zygomatic process of temporal bone for the reception of the condyle of the mandible.External acoustic meatus is an air filled tubular space that extends from the auricle of the external ear into the temporal bone to tympanic membrane.
Aim:Accordingly this study was aimed to evaluate the Morphometric analysis of tympanic plate, external acoustic meatus and mandible fossa in South Indian dry skull.
Materials and Methods:The present study was carried out on 50 South Indian dry human skulls irrespective of age and sex at Saveetha dental college ,Velappanchavadi - Chennai .All the skulls were vernier calliper has been used for measuring the Tympanic plate,Mandibular fossa ,External acoustic meatus.Photographs of the Tympanic plate,Mandibular fossa ,External acoustic meatus were taken for proper docu- mentation.
Results:The study has observed that the mean value of the upper border of the tympanic was 15.6908, lower border was 14.8744, and lateral border was 17.8682 . The mean length of external acoustic meatus was 13.8312, breadth was12.0906 . The mean anteroposterior diameter of the mandibular fossa was 23.4212 and transverse diameter was 13.792 .
Conclusion:The present thus concluded that the morphometric analysis of external acoustic meatus, tympanic plate and mandibular fossa is of utmost importance for easy and safe approach of those regions during surgical procedures. The present observation may also be essential in anthropological studies as well.
