Morphological and Morphometric Analysis of Sexual Dimorphism of Innominate Bone with Reference to Pubic Bone and Obturator Foramen

Author: SRINISHA.M , KARTHIK GANESH MOHANRAJ
Abstract: Hip bone is considered as a more suitable bone in the body for identification of sex because of its marked sexual dimorphism which is a result of childbearing and locomotion in females and males . Among the numerous pelvic traits presenting sex differences, the obturator foramen is classically described as being oval in males and triangular in females. The aim of this study is to analyze the sexual dimorphic features in innominate bone with reference to pubic bone and obturator foramen through morphometry. In the present study, a total of 40 dry human pelvic bones were morphometrically analyzed. Using the external features of pelvic bone the male and female pelvis were segregated. The length and breadth of obturator foramen were measured and the average diameter of obturator foramen was calculated in male and female pelvic bone. Also, the distance between Pubic tubercle to highest point on Iliopubic eminence was measured. All the observations were represented graphically using Mean ± SD. The diameter of the obturator foramen in male was found to be 39.66mm ± 2.93mm and in females was found to be 40.41mm ± 2.54mm . Also, the distance between pubic tubercle to highest point on iliopubic eminence in male was found to be 49.34mm ± 1.15mm and in female was found to be 51.66mm ± 0.94mm . Identification of sex of hip bone is the first step in creating a biological profile of the skeletal remains. This study is useful in analysing the morphological and morphometrical variation in male and female pelvic bone.
