A small depression which is found on the humerus just above the front part of the capitulum is known as radial fossa. It is the bony septum that separates the Coronoid fossa and the olecranon fossa at the lower end of the humerus. The opacity and the translucency is determined by the thickness of the bony septum. The aim of the study is to assess the morphological and morphometrical features of radial fossa of humerus bone and its clinical implications. 26 hand bones were collected from saveetha dental colleges and hospitals, chennai and certain parameters such as length, breadth and diameter of radial fossa was measured and the results were analysed.
The shapes found in the supratrochlear foramen are oval, round and triangular. It is known that the incidence of the radial fossa is more in right-handed bones than the left-handed bones. The knowledge of radial fossa favours the preoperative procedures in the patients with fractures in the distal humerus and helps in orthopaedic surgeons in making prosthesis. It also helps the radiologist in differentiating it from an osteolytic lesion or cystic lesion.
