Role of Toothbrush Bristles on The Surface Changes of The Tooth- A Narrative Review

Author: SHRUTHI M, MURUGAN THAMARAISELVAN
Abstract: Tooth brush is an important home care device to achieve effective mechanical plaque control by the patient. However it can result in adverse effects on tooth and periodontium when not used properly. Multiple factors have been suspected to be contributing to this like bristle hardness, brushing force, duration of brushing etc. Among these toothbrush bristle designs is one such factor that's long been considered to influence the surface changes on teeth. This review attempts to find out the available evidence of the role of different toothbrush bristle designs on the surface changes on the tooth. The relevant evidence for the review was collected using online database search like pubmed, medline, along with hand search. From the review it can be understood that the data regarding the bristle design on the surface changes are conflicting. However, the majority of studies have reported that there is no one superior design of manual toothbrush.
