The emissary foramina transmit the emissary veins which connect intracranial venous sinuses with extracranial venous sinuses. The knowledge of these foramina especially the occipital and emissary foramina plays a significant role in the neurointerventional and neurosurgical procedures. The aim of the study is to evaluate the presence, size and position of emissary foramina in skulls with special reference to parietal and occipital bone. In the present study, a total of 30 parietal, occipital and sagittal section of skull bones of unknown sex and without any gross abnormality was collected from the department of Anatomy, Saveetha Dental College, Chennai for evaluation. With the help of vernier caliper and ruler, the size of the emissary foramina was measured and analysed. The results obtained were analysed, tabulated and represented graphically. In the present study, the emissary foramina were observed in the posteroinferior angle, posterior border and superior border of the parietal bone and their size were more or less than 2 mm. The emissary foramina were found in the superior angle and the right lambdoid border of the occipital bone. From this study, we can conclude that presence, position , size and number of emissary foramina are of great variance and very minimal. A thorough knowledge and evaluation of the emissary foramina are essential while approaching endoscopic and neurosurgical procedures.
