Author: R.SARAVANAN , JAIGANESH RAMAMURTHY
Abstract: Dental lasers are one of the most significant developments in modern dentistry. Lasers were introduced into the field of dentistry in the 1960s.Many lasers have been investigated for the use in cavity preparation. The use of lasers can decrease morbidity after surgery and reduces the need for anaesthetics.the laser is used for caries prevention, bleaching, restorative removal and curing, cavity preparation, dentinal hypersensitivity, growth modulation and for diagnostic purposes, whereas soft tissue application includes incision, excision, ablation, wound healing, removal of hyperplastic tissue to uncovering of impacted or partially erupted tooth, photodynamic therapy for malignancies, photo stimulation of herpetic lesion. The aim of the study is to assess Knowledge and awareness in use of lasers in dental treatment among patients.A cross sectional survey was undertaken through an online survey platform of 110 patients.Number and percentage distribution among patients were calculated. A chi square was performed to assess the association between patients and responses to questions using SPSS 23.0,Where age group were assessed based on age were(32.35%), followed by age group of 30-40 years of age(53.92%) and patient with 50 years and above were(13.73%).Education status of the patients were assigned for laser treatments were patients respond Bachelor degree(25.45%),followed by patient who done school from 1-12 were(46.36%),Illiterate patients were(21.82%) and patient who studied master degree were(6.32%).Laser is a painless procedure were responded by patients “Yes”(56.36%) and (43.64%) of them responded “No”.Laser treatment requires local anaesthetic injection were responded patients”Yes”(43.52%) and(56.48%) of them responded ”No”.Patient who knows about lasers were responded “Yes”(40.91%) and(59.90%) of them responded”No”.From the results of Chi square test is evident that patient has lesser Knowledge and awareness about the application of laser in dental treatment.Within limitation of the study patient has to educate about laser treatment in the field of dentistry.
