Parental role is crucial since they are the primary caregivers of the child during preliminary stages of life. Without the established awareness, the parents cannot act as role models to their child in the field of dental care. Hence the current study aims to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice about primary dentition among parents in the Chennai population. It was a cross sectional survey conducted among 200 parents of children below 10 years of age. A total of 21 questions were asked regarding primary dentition by distributing a questionnaire. SPSS Version 19 was used for statistics. P <0.05 was considered statistically significant. 28% felt that it is not necessary to treat a primary tooth earlier and 43.5% of them prefer to take their child to the dentist only when a problem occurs. Females showed good attitudes regarding primary dentition compared to males(P=0.003). Parents with higher education level are aware that primary teeth problems interfere with permanent dentition(P=0.01). Males highly encourage the practice of giving sweet foods whenever the child asks for it (P=0.001). From results , average knowledge and attitude with unsatisfactory practices regarding a child’s primary dentition was observed.
