Knowledge Attitude And Perception Of Conventional And Self Ligating Bracket Systems Among The Postgraduates And Orthodontic Practitioners.

Author: ANJALI THOMAS, ARAVIND KUMAR SUBRAMANIAN, NIVETHIGAA B
Abstract: The aim of this survey was to determine knowledge, attitude and perception of use of self-ligating brackets (SLB) and conventional ligating brackets (CLB) during orthodontic treatment, as perceived by orthodontists and post graduate students. A survey questionnaire was prepared and distributed among the postgraduate students and practicing orthodontics. Responses were anonymous and statistical analysis was performed. The survey showed that most of the respondents(61.5%) preferred to use conventional bracket systems in their routine clinical practice. On the contrary, many practitioners preferred SLBs in cases of patient comfort and arch development is better with self-ligating brackets. CLBs were also preferred over SLB since they were cheaper when compared to conventional brackets. The orthodontists’ preference in the choice of bracket system was significantly influenced by type of case, average appointment intervals, patient comfort, pain perception and cost effectiveness. While the newly claimed advantages of SLBs are conferring to their increased acceptance among orthodontic practitioners, cost is the major concern in choosing them in clinic practice.
Keyword: Self-ligating brackets (SLB); Conventional ligating brackets (CLB); Orthodontists; Patient comfort.
