Dentin or dentinal hypersensitivity is a common, painful condition of the teeth characterized by short, sharp pain in response to certain stimuli. At macroscopic level, sensitive dentin appears the same as nonsensitive dentin. The condition of the pulp in dentinal hypersensitivity is not known, although the history of the condition does not suggest inflamed pulp. It is generally considered multifactorial in etiology and different dental practitioners treat such cases pertaining to their speciality depending on the actual cause. However, its association in the field of periodontics relates to a few factors like plaque accumulation, gingival recession and appropriate toothbrushing methods to overcome this disease. Therefore, this review article briefly explains certain facts and fundamentals of dentin hypersensitivity with regard to periodontics.
