Social media refers to websites that allow people to share information. Many people define social media as apps on their smartphones but the truth is, this communication tool started with computers. The social media provides a variety of educational approaches, entertainment and advertising, the latter it will be used for providing information to patients and public dental and medical professionals. To assess the impact of social media on dental students in Chennai a Self Administrated questionnaire related to the use of social media along with socio demographic details was prepared and distributed through an online survey planet link. About 41.9% of participants use Instagram more often . About 59% of the participants prefer social media for buying dental equipment and 50.2% of the students have learnt procedures in dentistry through social media. In our study, the majority of participants reported some utilisation of social media applications. However few reported for knowledge gaining purposes. The primary barriers cited for lack of social media use were time, privacy concerns, lack of expertise to implement applications, and uncertainty about the utility of social media in teaching.
