Analysis of Sexual Dimorphic Traits Through Morphometric Features of Clavicle

Author: CHAITANYA SHREE.P, KARTHIK GANESH MOHANRAJ
Abstract: Determination of sex is one of the diagnostic concern in analysis of human remains in both archaeology and forensics. Bones can also be used for determination of sex. One such bone is the clavicle. It is a paired S shaped bone seen on the first rib of the thorax. The functions of the clavicle is to transmit the loads of the upper extremity to the axial skeleton and to provide support for the muscles in the cervical and thoracic area. It also helps in stabilising the glenohumoral joint. The aim of the present study is to analyse the sexual dimorphism traits using morphological and morphometric features of the clavicle. In the present study a total of 50 bone samples were collected from the Department of Anatomy, Saveetha Dental College for evaluation. Bones were measured using Vernier Calliper and results were analysed, tabulated and measured graphically. We observed that male clavicle is greater in length when compared to the female clavicle. Other parameters like mid shaft circumference, breadth of sternal and acromial end were also measured and it is found that the breadth and circumference were also greater in males when compared to females. Hence we found that male clavicles are having greater measurements when compared to female clavicles in the present study. Thus clavicle is helpful in identifying sex of an individual and furthermore useful in archaeology and forensics for identification of the unknown individual.
