Author: B.V.M.ANIRUDH , DHANRAJ GANAPATHY, SUBHASHREE R, RAKSHAGAN V
Abstract: Salivary glands are exocrine glands secreting mainly saliva. Salivary gland is one among the soft tissue structures within the maxillofacial area. Saliva is a clear, slightly acidic mucous-serous fluid that coats the teeth, mucosa and thereby helps to make and maintain a healthy environment within the mouth. Salivary glands could also be suffering from a variety of diseases: local and systemic and therefore the prevalence of salivary glands depends upon various etiological factors. The glands could also be infected by viral , bacterial, fungal or its ductal obstruction which can cause painful swelling or obstruction affecting their functions. The aim of this study is to assess the awareness of salivary gland disorders among dental students.A set of questionnaire was framed and an online survey was conducted among dental students using surveyplanet.com. 100 dental students have taken the survey and the results were statistically analysed by using SPSS software. From the study, almost 60% of the students were aware of sialolithiasis, sialadenitis, sjogren syndrome, mumps and their symptoms. 55% of students were aware of all the treatment options for the particular disease. 73% of students are aware about the MMR vaccine. 86% of students find that this survey has helped them about salivary gland disorders.According to the survey, students are aware about the salivary gland disorders and their treatment but more awareness has to be created in diagnosing salivary gland disorders at an early stage so that further irreversible complications can be prevented.
