Aim: This study is aimed to observe the effect of various parenting styles and its association with child’s behavior and anxiety in a dental setup in India.
Materials and Methods: Children aged 4-8 years on their first dental visit were included. Their parents were asked to answer the Parenting Style Dimension Questionnaire (PSDQ). Oral prophylaxis and restorations were performed for the children and their behaviour was assessed using Frankl behavior rating scale. Anxiety levels were assessed using the Venham’s clinical anxiety rating scale(VCRS).
Results: Permissive parenting exhibited negative child behavior and increased anxiety levels. Authoritarian parenting showed comparatively lesser negative behavior and lesser increase in anxiety levels. Authoritative parenting showed the lesser negative behavior and lesser increase in anxiety levels as compared to authoritarian parenting.
Conclusions: There is a supportive association between parenting style and child dental anxiety and behavior. Authoritative parenting has better influence on anxiety levels and behavior of the child.
