Awareness On Management Strategies For Halitosis Among Dental Students

Author: TASLEEM S, DHANRAJ GANAPATHY, SUBHASHREE R, RAKSHAGAN V
Abstract: Unpleasant odor emitted from a person's oral cavity is referred to as halitosis. The other common terminologies that are used to denote halitosis are fetor oris, oral malodor, or bad breath. Halitosis is an oral health condition characterized by consistently emanating odorous breath and may be caused by several agents including poor oral hygiene, improper cleaning of dentures, decreased salivary flow rate, use of tobacco in any form, or certain systemic conditions. To assess the awareness on management strategies for halitosis among dental students. This was a survey based study and was conducted in an online forum “Google forms”. This survey was taken by around 100 dental students, both undergraduates and postgraduates. The questionnaire was framed to evaluate the ideas and knowledge of dental students about halitosis. The information collected through the survey was analysed using SPSS and presented as descriptive statistics. One hundred students were examined for the survey, out of which 62.7% of the students were aware of the term what is halitosis while the rest didn’t have a brief idea about what halitosis is. From the survey it is noted that, majority of the people experience halitosis when they’re hungry or thirsty. Also when it was examined whether the students skip their breakfast during working days, to the shock it is found out that majorly 69% participants out of 100 skip their breakfast as well as lunch working in empty stomachs, which is also one of the major causes of halitosis. The awareness about halitosis and its management is moderate among dental students. From the survey it is well thought that, majority of the individuals lose self confidence and become shy when someone approaches them because of halitosis.
