Apps are software programmes that run on smartphones and other mobile devices. Health apps can help people manage their own health and wellness, promote healthy living and gain access to useful information when and where they need it. The Brush DJ oral health app was developed to offer to motivate an evidence-based oral hygiene routine. The objective of this preliminary investigation was to assess user perception of an oral health app to give a basis for future research and development of app technology in relation to oral health. This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at a school in Mogappair, Chennai. The two groups were demonstrated with Fones brushing technique. The plaque index and papillary bleeding index were calculated at baseline, 1week, 1 month and after 6 weeks. The Brush DJ application was used as an educational aid to give them daily reminders of maintaining their oral hygiene. The statistical analysis on the gathered data was carried out and the data was displayed. 60 parents responded to the study. The two groups had 30 participants each. Four broad themes relating to how the app helped toothbrushing were reported. These themes were motivation, education, compliance and perceived benefits. Within the limitations of our study, it can be concluded that the Brush DJ app significantly improved the oral hygiene of children with autism spectrum disorder.
