Abstract:

Social media plays a major influence on the social, industrial and academic life of people around the world not only in normal situations but to a major extent during lock down periods. This media creates both positive as well negative impact on student population and their academic performance. So, the objective of the study was framed to evaluate the influence of social media on academic performance of college students on online education and examinations during lock down period. The present study used a descriptive research survey method to study was to evaluate the usage of different forms of social media, addictive tendency of student towards it, positive end of social platform usage on daily academic work , gender differences in the usage during lock down period. To assess the influence of social media on students online academic performance, a modified type of Likert –type scale entitled “Social Media and Academic Performance of Students Questionnaire (SMAAPOS)” was used. The questions of the study were analysed and the cumulative percentage and frequency was presented in tables. The results of the present study revealed that participants agreed to use social media for about half a day in lock down period, addictiveness to social networking during indoors was at moderate level and male students are fast users but female use it frequently for online academic related work. Thus the study concluded that social media influences the academic performance in online education and throws light on the student mentality towards social networking, the positive and negative attitudes, their diversion, their productive time and its benefits not only during lock down but also in usual times. The study promotes recommendations for the teaching community about the awareness of social media use and poses its guided utilization for better life and education.
