Knowledge Level Of Non-Health Major Students Towards Smoking Effects In Oral Health

Abstract: Background: Smoking is one of the bad habits in the community. Globally, there are 1.2 million smokers from developing countries. In Indonesia, 64.9% of smokers are men> 15 years old. Smoking is known to have negative effects on oral health, such as decreased sensitivity to the sense of taste, tooth discoloration and restoration material, palatal keratosis, oral candidiasis melanosis, halitosis, excessive plaque accumulation and calculus, dental caries to oral cancer. The formation of behavior and habits are influenced by knowledge. Purpose: To find out the level of knowledge of non-health students in Surabaya about the effects of smoking on oral health. Method: This research uses descriptive research method and sampling using simple random sampling technique with a total sample of 105 non-health students in Surabaya (Universitas Airlangga and Ten November Institute of Technology). The research instrument used was a questionnaire. Results: This study showed 66.7% of non-health students had knowledge of the effects of smoking on oral health at a good level, 24.8% at a moderate level, and 8.6% at a bad level. Conclusion: Non-health students in Surabaya have a good level of knowledge about the effects of smoking on oral health.
