Abstract:

Background: Tooth loss is a dental and oral health problem that often arises in the community because it often interferes with the function of mastication, speech, aesthetics, and even social relations.
Purpose: This study aims to examine the content of chitosan in squid pen as an antibacterial against Streptococcus mutans.
Methods: This study is an experimental laboratory with a Post Test Only Control Group Design research design. The sample was the Streptococcus Mutans bacteria obtained from the Research Center of the Faculty of Dental Medicine, Universitas Airlangga, Surabaya. The results were analyzed using the Oneway ANOVA and Post hoc Tukey test.
Result: The results showed that at concentrations of 3.13% with the mean value of 12.57 bacterial colonies and at a concentration of 1.56% with the mean value of 30.85 bacterial colonies.
Conclusion: that the chitosan extract from squid pen has an antibacterial power against Streptococcus mutans at a concentration of 6.25%.
