Association between Severity of Decompensated Cirrhosis Measured with Model of End-Stage Liver Disease Score and Plasma Fibrinogen Level

Author: LUTHFIAJANNAH , POERNOMO BOEDI SETIAWAN, MADE PUTRA SEDANA
Abstract: Introduction: Coagulation disorder is one the most frequent complications in decompensated cirrhosis. One of the coagulation factors being impaired is fibrinogen which plays a role in bleeding complications. This study aimed to determine correlation between decompensated cirrhosis severity and plasma fibrinogen level. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, involving thirty-one patients which was conducted in dr. Soetomo General Hospital, Surabaya. The severity of decompensated cirrhosis was measured by Model Of End Stage Liver Disease (MELD) Score, while fibrinogen level was examined by the Sysmex CS-2100i machine. Results: Among thirty-one subjects, the majority of subjects were male with 19 (61.2%), while female was 13 (38.8%). The patients’ mean age was 52.2 ± 8.87 years (range 27-64 years). The causes of decompensated liver cirrhosis in this study were hepatitis B (45.2%) and hepatitis C (41.9%). The median of MELD score was 11. The mean of fibrinogen level was 171.077 ± 65.3 mg/dL. There was a negative correlation between MELD score and fibrinogen level (p = 0.008; r = -0.466). Conclusion: Decompensated cirrochis severity measured with MELD score is associated with plasma fibrinogen level.
