Pattern of Mandibular Third Molar Impaction- A Retrospective Study

Author: REVATHI.B , GIFRINA JAYARAJ, KIRAN KUMAR PANDURANGAN
Abstract: Impaction is mostly seen to occur in mandible than in maxilla. Many Previous literature mentioned a mandibular third molar is the common tooth to undergo impaction. It is associated with various pathology like mesial caries, swelling, cyst formation, root resorption etc. Pattern of impaction vary among each individual and greatly influence the individual’s health related quality of life. Hence this study aims to assess the pattern of mandibular third molar impaction with inclusion of age groups. This is a retrospective, descriptive and radiographic study. The study was conducted during the month of May 2020. A total of 86000 patients' records were reviewed and analysed who visited the institution during the period of June 2019 to March 2020 from which 274 OPGs were retrieved and assessed for age, gender, unilateral/bilateral, level of impaction and type of impaction. Collected data was tabulated in the excel sheet and imported to SPSS for statistical analysis. The pattern of mandibular third molars revealed a high prevalence of impaction, which was mostly mesioangular(49.2%), level B(60.5%) and bilateral pattern(61.8%) with a gender predilection for males(60.2%). Mesioangular type showed high incidence with level B impaction(p<0.001, chi square test). Impacted third molars show high difficulty level to predict the complications if left untreated. Hence this study enables dentists to determine the pattern of impacted lower third molar thereby providing the optimum treatment and preventing predictable complications.
