Awareness and practice on various restorative and non restorative treatment options for incipient carious lesions among undergraduate students

Author: RAJA KUMAR, SINDHU RAMESH, V.VISHNU PRIYA
Abstract: Dental caries is an irreversible microbial disease of the calcified tissues of the teeth characterized by demineralization of the inorganic portion and destruction of the organic substance of the tooth, which often leads to cavitation. The caries process involves phases of demineralization and remineralization. However, there are various stages in the progression of caries disease. Initially it begins as demineralization and ultimately leads to cavitation if it is not treated in the early stage. Incipient carious lesion is an early phase of tooth decay as it only demineralised. The aim of this KAP survey was to assess the level of awareness among the undergraduate students, their practice of various restorative and non restorative treatment options for treating incipient carious. An online survey was done with the structured questionnaire based on knowledge, attitude, practice among the dental students and it was distributed among 200 undergraduate students via electronic media. Data entry was done in the Excel sheet and SPSS software was used to analyze the data. The descriptive statistics were used to determine the frequencies and percentage of the responses given by the participants. We received 200 responses from the participants and among 210 responses, 71.5% consisted of females and 28.5 % consisted of male. 65.6% of the participants were under the age group 18-20 years. Majority of the participants were 3rd years (38.0 %).The results showed that awareness and types of non invasive methods during the treatment of incipient lesions most of students are petrified to proceed with the treatment. The study concluded that students are having good knowledge and awareness about the restorative and non-restorative treatment option for incipient caries.
