Background: Oro-facial clefts are the congenital malformations involving lip and palate. These conditions are linked in morbidity and mortality as well as substantial medical costs and psychological difficulties for both the infant and their family.
Aim: To evaluate the effect of maternal occupation on oro-facial cleft. Methods: Because of the relative rarity of birth defects, using a cohort to prospectively assess individual level maternal exposures is prohibitive, so retrospective approaches are typically used instead patients with orofacial clefts identified using the department database and clinical records. A total of 50 patients details were analyzed and taken by reviewing patients record. Results: oro facial clefts are not gender dependent and the mother with minimal physical activity are more prone.
Conclusion: Maternal occupational may be related to the etiology of orofacial clefts. In summary, these findings support a weak association between estimated occupational and risk for CLP and cleft palate. More research is needed to confirm and better understand these results.
