Prevalence of supernumerary teeth in permanent dentition

Author: SHRUTHI MANIVANNAN, GIFRINA JAYARAJ, MURUGAN THAMARAISELVAN
Abstract: Supernumerary teeth are the excess number of teeth formed as a result of disturbances occurring during odontogenesis. The exact etiology of its presence is not known, but there are several theories that justify their existence. This research aims to estimate the prevalence of supernumerary teeth in the permanent dentition. A retrospective evaluation was conducted to find out subjects who presented with the supernumerary teeth between June 2019- March 2020 at the University Dental Hospital. For the included subjects, data regarding supernumerary teeth present, demographic factors, other clinical and radiographic photographs associated were extracted. Out of the 86,000 subjects who visited the Hospital within the study period, the supernumerary teeth were rarely present with only 54 patients showing the presence. Pearson Chi square test was done to investigate the association of the presence of supernumerary teeth to age and gender. The prevalence of supernumerary teeth for different age groups was found out, with 30-45 (37%) years being the most common age group to exhibit the presence of supernumerary teeth and Male predominance (77.8%) was observed. Incidence of supernumerary teeth was found to be more common in maxillary posterior region (38.9%). The maximum number of supernumerary teeth present in the same patient was 2. This research serves as an eye opener to all dentists as well as the general population and gives an insight of the most common tooth region it occurs, its predilection and the possible complications it can lead to and address educational/ awareness issues.
