Edentulism is defined as the loss/ absence of teeth in the oral cavity. It can be due to caries, trauma or poor periodontal health. Complete edentulism can be defined as loss of all the teeth, the prevalence of complete edentulism has been widely reported and is very common in India. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of complete edentulism among patients visiting a University Teaching Hospital. The records of 86000 patients who visited the institution from march 2019 to June 2020 were reviewed. 421 records of completely edentulous patients were obtained Additional demographic data such as gender, age and the edentulous arch were obtained and exported to SPSS software for descriptive statistics such as Chi-square analysis. Among 421 patients, the retrospective study had 252 male participants and 169 female participants. The prevalence rate of completely edentulous patients with both arch missing was 0.05 and the prevalence rate of single arch missing was found to be 0.008. Statistical significance was observed during correlation between edentulousness and gender (p-value=0.004), however, there is no significant association between complete edentulism and age of the person ( p-value = 0.17). Within the limitations of the study, we can conclude that the prevalence rate for edentulousness is 0.05 which is considerably lower when compared to developed nations. Also, the highest prevalence was seen in patients who were between the ages of 51-70.
