Author: MANYA SURESH, KARTHIK GANESH MOHANRAJ, NIVETHIGAA B
Abstract: Sciatica is a debilitating condition in which the patient experiences paresthesia in the distribution of the sciatic nerve. Obesity is defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health and well being. Sedentary lifestyle may be one of the main determinants of the rising prevalence of obesity. Obesity has also long been suspected as a risk factor for sciatica. Therefore this study was carried out to find the association between sciatica, obesity and sedentary lifestyle among adults of different age groups. An online questionnaire was prepared on an online survey portal and was circulated among young, middle aged and older adults. The study was carried out in the month of May, 2020. There were a total of 77 responses. Once the survey was completed data was collected and tabulated. It was imported to SPSS for Statistical analysis. Descriptive statistics were carried out and chi square test was done for each of the questions. Year of data collection: 2020; Time period of data analysis: 1 month. From the results obtained, we analyzed that there was more awareness about the association of sciatica, obesity and sedentary lifestyle among older adults and younger adults when compared to middle aged adults.91.6% of the older adults and 91.4% of the young adults had more knowledge about the association of obesity and sciatica than middle aged adults (66.4%). 34% of the younger adults were more aware of sciatica when compared to middle aged adults only 27% and 8% of the older adults were aware of sciatica. Within the limits of the present study, it can be concluded that the awareness of association between sciatica, obesity and sedentary lifestyle was more among the older adults and younger adults as a reflection of their lifestyle and education and the awareness was not significant among the middle aged population.
