Prevalence of Different Antisialogogues Used Before Master Impression: A Retrospective Study

Author: AMAN MERCHANT, NABEEL AHMED, VISALAKSHI RAMANATHAN
Abstract: Salivary secretions are a common problem faced by the dental practitioner, mostly while taking impressions. Saliva hampers the flow of the impression material into the sulcus area, thereby preventing the recording of the area. Hence, certain drugs like antisialogogue can be used to aid in controlling the salivary flow. The aim of this study is to check the prevalence of two antisialogogues namely, Cetirizine and Propantilane bromide and their correlation with various parameters, such as age, gender and sextant. The subjects for this retrospective study were selected from June 2019 to May 2020. The antisialogogues to be tested were divided into two groups: Group 1: Cetirizine and Group 2: Propantheline Bromide. Frequencies of the antisialogogues used were checked and Chi-square test was used to check the correlation. It was observed that Cetirizine was more commonly used than Propantilane bromide. When the correlation with age was checked, it was observed that both the antisialogogues were common in younger patients. When the correlation with gender was checked, it was observed that both the antisialogogues were more common in males than females. When the correlation with age was checked, it was observed that Cetirizine was more common in sextant 2, whereas Propantheline bromide was more common in sextants 1, 2 and 6. Within the limitations of the study, it can be concluded that the preference of Cetirizine was more than propantheline bromide but more number of studies with a larger sample size needs to be done.
