Previously, an ethnobotanical survey of plants used for the treatment of bone disease was performed in Amphur Muang
Maha Sarakram Province resulting in one E-san traditional formula which has been commonly been used by the traditional
physicians for treatment of blood circulation and improvement of bone. The formula consists of 12 medicinal plants
including Aquilaria crassna Pierre ex Lecomte, Ellipanthus tomentosus Kurz. var. tomentosus, Eurycoma longifolia Jack,
Goniothalamus elegans Ast, Naringi crenulata (Roxb.) Nicolson), Piper interruptum Opiz, Polyalthia cerasoides (Roxb.)
Benth. ex Bedd, Salacia chinensis L., Suregada multiflorum (A.Juss.) Baill., Ventilago denticulata Willd., Ziziphus
attopoensis Pierre and Ziziphus oenoplia (L.) Mill. var. oenoplia. The present study is the first to establish the
pharmacognostic specification, to evaluate a preliminary phytochemical screening and to present a TLC separation of the Esan
formula. Microscopic characteristics of the formula are sclereids, part of fibers with crystal oxalates and bordered pitted
vessel parenchyma which were abundant in wood fibers and starch. Flavonoids, other phenolic compounds including
tannins, and terpenoids were detected. For future investigation we suggest to specify these compounds and to investigate
their contribution to the traditional use of the formula.
