Background: Salivary gland tumors are uncommon and the microscopic features can be complex. Epidemiological data of these tumors in the various parts of the world can be helpful for a better understanding of its biology and clinical characteristics. Most are located in parotid glands and are benign. The principal hurdle in their management lies in the difficulty in distinguishing malignant tumours. The salivary gland system of the upper aero digestive tract plays a critical role in the functions of digestion, respiration, communication, and overall homeostasis. The Salivary gland swellings can be broadly classified into inflammatory, non-inflammatory and neoplastic swellings. Salivary gland tumors present usually as a localized, painless, and mobile swelling or as diffuse and non-mobile. The great variety of histological appearances seen in salivary gland tumors makes this a complex group of neoplasms.
Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the age and gender predilection of salivary gland malignancies.
Materials and methods: A retrospective study samples of 50 cases were retrieved from the data of 86000 patients between June 2019 and March 2020 patient records and analysed. Statistical software used for analysis is the SPSS(statistical package for the social sciences) which is designed by IBM and the statistical test used were frequency tables along with bar graphs to analyse and compare the obtained results.
Results: Results from the study reveals that the prevalence of salivary gland malignancies among the males are 58.9% and among the females are 41.1%; distribution of salivary gland malignancies among various age groups reveal 74.5% below 50 years and 25.5% above 50 years. Further assessment of swelling in the salivary gland revealed about 25.5% of the population with right side swelling and 22.8% of the population having the left side swelling. The correlation between the Gender and the frequency of swelling in the salivary gland revealed Pearson Chi-Square Value-0.476; p>0.05. Hence statistically not significant.
Conclusion: The overall results reveal a strong male predilection and also reveals that the age group below 50 years is more susceptible for salivary gland tumour; swelling in the left side is more common than right side
