Due to evolving developmental growth changes in humans the incidence of impacted mandibular molars is increasing due to deficiency in arch form and jaw growth. Many times partially impacted mandibular third molars are associated with pericoronitis due to food impaction between teeth and Pericoronal flaps, if the oral hygiene is not maintaining properly it may lead to pericoronitis and Pericoronal abscess formation so that our aim is to assess the association of risk between the impacted mandibular third molars in pericoronitis and Pericoronal abscess it may help us in early intervention of patients with pericoronitis and peri coronal abscess associated with impacted teeth. The aim of the study is to assess angulation of mandibular third molar teeth as a risk factor for Pericoronitis and Pericoronal abscess. A total of 650 patients ranging in age from 18 to 40 years, suffering from pericoronitis and Pericoronal abscess reported to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Saveetha Dental College were taken into this study. Subjective and objective observations were recorded, that includes age, gender, angulation of partially impacted mandibular third molars. Period of study is from June 2019 to March 2020. All the data’s collected were analyzed and scrutinized by an external reviewer and resultant data were tabulated. Final data subjected to statistical analysis using chi square test in SPSS by IBM. The results obtained in a study indicates that pericoronitis and Pericoronal abscess were associated more in the patients with the age group of 20 to 35 years. Position of mandibular third molars were also associated with the Pericoronitis and Pericoronal abscess. Within the limitation of the study, mesio angular position of tooth/mesio angular impaction of mandibular third molars had the highest risk factor for pericoronitis and Pericoronal abscess formation.
