Effect of Alcoholic and Aqueous Extracts of some Medicinal Plants on some Pathogenic Bacteria

Author: MUSTAFA JALA, ODAY J. KADHIM
Abstract: The current study investigated both alcoholic and aqueous extracts of Zingber officinale leaves, Zizyphusspin csiti leaves and Mentha spicata leaves, in order to identify active compound and their biological activities on some pathogenic bacteria. Results show that alcoholic and aqueous extract for both Zizyphusspin and Mentha leaves contain Alkaloids, Tanins, Saponin and Phenolic compound. Whilst Zingber alcoholic extracts showed positive results to the appearance of Alkaloids, Glycosides, Tanins and Terpenoids. Whereas Zingber aqueous extracts had Glycosides, Saponin and Steroids. Biological activities result showed significant effect of all extracts on Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epedermids, Streptococcus pyogens, Klebseilla pneumonia and Escherichia coli in-vitro. However, there were some differences between alcoholic and aqueous extracts towards some bacterial species when tested by well in agar test . Maximal peak of inhibition zone in Zingber (20mm) of Staph. aureus and E. coli upon ethanolic extract while minimal inhibition zone was (15mm) for aqueous extract of K. pneumonia. Zizyphusspin leaves recorded highest inhibition zone of (19mm) of Staph. aureus bacteria for ethanolic extract, while lowest inhibition zone of (10mm) of Staph. aureus and Staph. epedermids for aqueous extract. For Mentha leaves, highest inhibition zone of (20mm) in (K. pneumonia) for the ethanolic extract, while the lowest inhibition zone of (14mm) in Staph. epedermids in the aqueous extract. Over all, alcoholic extract for all plants that used were more effective than aqueous in inhibiting bacterial growth.
