The risk of developing mania is generally low in major depressive disorder (MDD) patients receiving antidepressant treatment. Although patients age and types of antidepressants is shown to play a role as a contributing risk, duration of usage of antidepressants draws no definite conclusion due to inadequate studies done. It is important to note that studies showed patients may still develop mania despite not being on treatment and taking antidepressants may accelerate the progression of the disease. Overall, an important factor that must be taken into consideration when starting antidepressants is whether the patient has a risk of developing mania in the future.
