Having a diagnosis of bipolar disorder does not prohibit a woman from being pregnant. However, hormonal changes in pregnancy may cause fluctuation in moods, and trigger mood episodes in women with the condition. Hence, continuation of effective treatment is crucial throughout the pregnancy. In treating such patients, the doctor must consider carefully the optimal dose of the medication and its side effects to both mother and developing baby. In this paper, we review previous studies and available information on the potential effects of quetiapine to both mother and the foetus. Our findings suggest that at low dose, quetiapine does not result in an unfavourable outcome in pregnancy.
