Skin is one of the main resources for a variety of stem cell subpopulations, including epidermal stem cells, hair follicle stem cells, and dermal mesenchymal stem cells. A rich source of melanocyte stem cells is embedded in the outer root sheath of a hair follicle. These hair follicle stem cells have tremendous, unexplored potential in the treatment of vitiligo, since the initial re-pigmentation is often observed around hair follicles. Newer cell technologies used as a surgical treatment for vitiligo are based on the use of a suspension prepared from the outer root sheath of a hair follicle. Progress in studies of melanocytes and stem cells has made it possible to reveal various cytokines, growth factors and regulators involved in the proliferation and differentiation of melanoblasts, which can be used for autologous regeneration of melanocytes in situ. In this literature review, we briefly discuss the current situation and prospects for the use of hair follicle stem cells in the treatment of vitiligo.
