Self-Help Strategies to Reduce Emotional Distress among Indonesian Doctoral Students who Studied Abroad: A Phenomenology Study

Abstract:

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyse the essence of the experience of self-help strategies to reduce emotional distress among Indonesian doctoral students who studied abroad.
Methodology: The method used a qualitative study with phenomenology design. This study adopted Husserl’s concept of transcendental subjectivity or “Bracketing.” This study involved semi-structured interviews and was undertaken to obtain rich data that reflected the essence of the participants’ experience. This study used content analysis, N-Vivo 12.0 Pro, and aims analysis.
Results: Two themes found to emerge where emotional distress as tiredness, crisis due to take care of all of the details in learning trajectory and anxiety-related publication. The second is self-help strategies as persuading to completed learning, not being trapped in stress, seeking self-outdoor activity, elevating hope, and feeling happy.
