ABSTRACT
This widespread prevalence of silicone tamponade is due to the following advantages of silicone oil: the minimal toxic effect of silicone oil on eye tissue, the possibility of prolonging the duration of tamponade, and the convenience and ease of use. Despite this, the question of the timing of silicone tamponade remains open to date. This is associated with the risk of recurrence of retinal detachment after removal of silicone, the frequency of which varies from 5-80%. Material and methods. Operated 80 patients (80 eyes) with various genesis retinal detachments complicated with proliferative vitreoretinopathy. The age of patients ranged from 18 to 60 years. There were 52 (65%) men and 28 (35%) women. All patients were divided into three groups depending on the duration of silicone tamponade. Results. After removal of silicone in the first group in 6(24%) patients in the first 3 months a relapse of retinal detachment occurred. In 4(16%) patients with PDR, repeated hemophthalmos occurred. In the second group only in 1(3.7%) patient relapse of retinal detachment occurred. After removal of silicone in the third group, no patient had a relapse of retinal detachment, but in 10(35.7%) patients, optic nerve atrophy occurred due to secondary hypertension.
