The article includes the latest researches on a new coronavirus COVID-19, which has overcome the interspecific barrier and has become pathogenic for humans. The first reports of a new coronavirus came from China in December last year (in the city of Wuhan, Hubei province), where an outbreak of an infectious disease proceeded which was caused by a previously unknown virus. It turned out that the new virus is slightly different from other strains of coronaviruses, which are seasonal and year-round present in the structure of acute respiratory viral infections and cause damage to the upper respiratory tract of mild to moderate severity. The genetic sequence of COVID-19 is similar to the genetic sequence of SARS-CoV by 70%.
People of all age categories are susceptible to this infection. The virus also spreads by airborne droplets as well as by contact with eyes, nose or mouth. The incubation period lasts from 2 to 14 days. An infected person can be contagious even during the incubation period. On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that the worldwide spread of COVID-19 coronavirus infection “can be described as a pandemic. Today, the number of countries (as well as autonomous territories) in which coronavirus is detected has reached 210.
