Background: Cataract is the leading cause of blindness worldwide1. Current trend is SICS and Phacoemulsification (Phaco) for cataract. method preferred is Phacoemulsification in both developed as well as in developing countries. The most popular methods of nucleotomy are “Divide and Conquer”,` “Chopping”.The stop and chop can be very effectively used as a launch pad for transitioning to direct chop techniques once the surgeon is comfortable with the standard divide & conquer technique. Aim is to compare the variation in corneal endothelial cell density and corneal thickness corresponding to effective phaco time measured during phacoemulsification by the stop & shop and divide & conquer techniques .
Trial design:This is a randomised control trial that will be conducted in department of Ophthalmology, AVBRH.
Methods: Total of 230 subjects were included in the study. Among them 115 will undergo phacoemulsification by stop and chop technique and 115 will undergo phacoemulsification by divide and conquer technique. Post-operative cental corneal thickness, endothelial cell density and absolute phaco time will be evaluated at intervals of post-op day 1, at end of 1st week and at end of 6 weeks.
Results: We expect the outcome that stop and chop surgical technique uses less energy and reduces complications in patients undergoing phacoemulsification. Hence these patients will have better visual outcome and lesser postoperative complications.
Conclusion: stop and chop technique will be easier to learn and better than divide and conquer in So we can use this technique on more routine basis.simple yet effective method to reduce post-operative inflammation and have better visual outcome.
