To evaluate macular changes after uncomplicated phacoemulsification by optical coherence tomography.

Author: RUTA WALAVALKAR, SOHAN LOHIYA, RAKHI WAIGI
Abstract: Background: Phacoemulsification is the preferred technique of cataract extraction mainly due to the least amount of complications associated with it. Studies have shown that macular thickness is increased after phacoemulsification which may lead to patient developing Cystoid Macular edema (CME) which is the most sight-threatening complication of cataract surgery. The early changes in the macular thickness can be assessed on the OPD basis by a simple, routine investigation named Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). Thus with proper use of OCT to assess macular thickness during post-op follow ups of patients, and taking prompt preventive measures, the impending CME can be prevented along with getting a better visual prognosis. Objectives-To study and compare macular thickness before and after phacoemulsification surgery. To study and compare changes in the macular thickness at various post-operative intervals following phacoemulsification surgery. Methodology- This is a cross-sectional study of 60 sample size where OCT will be done before phacoemulsification surgery and on 3 occasions post-operatively. Data will be compiled and macular thickness will be assessed and compared on all 4 occasions. Results- The expected outcome of this study would be a progressive increase in the macular thickness in each follow up with maximum increase seen at the end of third month post-operatively. Conclusion- A seemingly uncomplicated Phacoemulsification surgery may also lead to a statistically significant increase in the macular thickness especially in the first few weeks post-operatively. Thus, longer follow up of patients will be required for detecting macular changes post-phacoemulsification and various Management protocols should be studied in a randomized control fashion.
