Metronidazole: Crystal Growth and its Structural Refinement

Author: RANJANA SHARMA, DIXIT PRASHER, R. K. TIWARI
Abstract: The title compound belongs to the family of 5- Nitroimidazole synthetically derived drugs. It primarily used to fight against various types of infections in humans caused by anaerobic bacteria, protozoa, giardiasis, trichomonoiasis, amoebiasis and is mainly used for the treatment of vaginal infections in women, intestine and respiratory tract problems. The present work reports the crystal growth and structural refinement of metronidazole, by using the single-crystal XRD (X-ray diffraction) method and SHELX 97 programme. It was observed that the crystallization of metronidazole took place in the space group named monoclinic P21/c with unit cell parameters a= 7.0216(7) ?, alpha = 90 deg, b = 8.6966(8) ?, beta = 94.627(4) deg, c = 12.7888(9) ?, gamma = 90 deg, V=778.39(12) A3 and Z=4. The Theta range for data collection was chosen between 2.840 to 25.990. The structure factor value was came out 320 and for 1474 unique reflections, final R = 0.0448. The average of bond distance was found to be 0.96(1) ? and 1.375 ? for C-H and N-C types respectively
