Aqueous extracts of Commiphora mukul hook ex stocks., Cedrus deodar roxb- loud., Bauhinia variegate., Achyranthes aspera linn. and Picrorrhiza kurroa royle ex. Benth. have been used individually for treating cardio vascular disorder such as hyperlipidemia in traditional system of medicine. Though the individual herbal extracts have been used safely there are no reports on the safety of these herbs when used in combination. Hence a limit test at 5,000 mg/kg was carried out for the polyherbal preparation comprising the extracts as per Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) guideline. Female sprague dawley rats received a single oral dose of 5,000 mg/kg body weight of polyherbal preparation and two control female sprague dawley rats were orally given 2 ml. of distilled water. No concrete evidences of toxicities attributable to treatment with the polyherbal preparation were observed on behavioral pattern, hematology, clinical signs, serum biochemistry examination of liver and renal function and also histological evaluation of liver, kidney and heart. Therefore, single oral administration of polyherbal prepatation up to 5,000 mg/kg b.wt. to rats under this study condition produced no significantly toxicological effects.
