Evaluation of antioxidant activity and nutritional value of Desmodium velutinum(Willd.) D.C. leaves: A folklore plant of Orissa

Abstract:

Introduction:
Desmodium velutinum(WILLD.)D.C. (Fabaceae) has been accredited with numerous therapeutic claims in Indian traditional medical systems, especially for its ethnomedicinal uses. It is most commonly used to treat diarrhoea by different tribes in India. The present study was carried out to evaluate the antioxidant activity and nutritional value of leaves of Desmodium velutinum.
Materials and Methods:
Antioxidant potential using DPPH, FRAP and Phosphomolybdenum assay and different nutritional parameters such as total carbohydrate, true protein, protein, total fat, energy, Vitamin C, iron, zinc, manganese, phosphorus, calcium of the leaves were evaluated following the standard guidelines.
Results:
Antioxidant activities of leaves increased with increasing concentrations in the dose-dependent manner by Diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, ferric-reducing antioxidant power assay and phosphomolybdenum assay. The leaves were found with high content of protein, energy, Vitamin C, iron, calcium and zinc.
Conclusion:
The result of this study shows that the leaves of Desmodium velutinum possess mild antioxidant properties. Leaves are found nutritious with the high content of protein, energy, Vitamin C, iron, zinc and calcium. Being wild, it is accessible in parts of Orissa, Maharashtra and Karnataka and cheaper source of nutrition.
