Background: Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) is one of the most important pathogenic gram-negative spiral bacterium, it has a helix shape, infects gastric mucosa and cause sores called peptic ulcers in the lining of human stomach or the upper part of small intestine.
Methods: A total of 60 out-patients infected with H.pylori were included in this study, smokers and nonsmokers, male and female, age rang 20-60 years old. Serum concentrations of cluster of differentiation 4 (CD+4), macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) and nuclear factor kappa (NF-kB) in patients with H.pylori were measured by Enzyme-linked Immuno Sorbent Assay (ELISA) technique.
Results: Serum concentration of CD4 in patients with H.pylori was in high level (3.4458 ± 0.40140 ng/ml) with significant increase (P-value=0.0061) as compared with healthy individuals (control) (1.8052 ± 0.24851 ng/ml). Also, there was significant increase (P-value=0.0003) in serum concentration of MIF in patients with H.pylori (62.467 ± 1.5900 ng/ml) as compared with control (52.124 ± 2.5918 ng/ml). Serum concentration of NF-kB in patients with H.pylori was in high level (7.3333 ± 0.64266 ng/ml) with significant increase (P-value= < 0.0001) as compared with control (3.0657 ± 0.56401 ng/ml). On the other hand, the results proved that there was significant increase (P-value= 0.0028) in serum concentration of NF-kB in male smokers with H.pylori (9.9169 ± 0.83749ng/ml) as compared with nonsmokers male with H.pylori (5.1227 ± 1.2265 ng/ml).
Conclusions: Humoral and cellular immune response together plays an important role in patients with H.pylori. Nuclear factor kappa consider as a risk factor in smokers patients with H.pylori it can be considered as an early diagnosis for stomach cancer.
