Ceiba pentandra (L). Gaertn. (Bombacaceae) commonly known as silk cotton tree. The plant has been used as
antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, in rheumatism, diabetes and in headache in Indian system of traditional
medicine. Present study was carried out to evaluate the analgesic and antipyretic effects of petroleum ether and ethanolic
extract of the seeds of Ceiba pentandra. Ceiba pentandra seeds were successively extracted by soxhlet extraction using
petroleum ether (40-600C) and ethanol. Analgesic activity was assessed by heat induced pains (tail immersion model) and
antipyretic activity using brewer’s yeast-induced pyrexia model. Oral administration of petroleum ether (40-600C) and
ethanol extract at doses of 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg significantly reduced brewers yeast-induced pyrexia and also in tail
immersion method extracts showed significant analgesic activity. These results clearly showed analgesic and antipyretic
effects of seed extracts. Further studies are needed to clarify the mechanism of action and the phytoconstituents responsible
for these pharmacological effects.
