Anacardium occidentale L. is small to medium tree, generally single-trunked and spreading in habit, with a height of 12 m,
cultivated prominently in seashore areas, India being the second largest country for its cultivation (about 25%). Leaves are
thick, prominently veined, oval to spatulate in shape, with blunt tips and entire margins, new foliage contains reddish
pigment. Flowers are numerous in terminal panicles, 10-20 cm long, green and reddish. Fruits are reniform, achne about 3
cm long and called as Cashew Apple. The present study was undertaken to evaluate in vitro antioxidant activities of ethyl
acetate soluble (AOEt) and methanol soluble (AOM) extract of leaves of A.occidentale L. Quantification of phenolics in
AOM and AOEt by Folin-Ciocalteau method showed the presence of good amount of total polyphenolics 85mg/gm and
39mg/gm (calculated as per Gallic acid), total flavonoid content found to be 32.37 mg/gm and 31.96 mg/gm (rutin
equivalent) and total flavonol content found to be 30 mg/gm and 20 mg/gm (Rutin equivalent) respectively. Both extracts
were tested for 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging, Nitric oxide radical scavenging and Hydrogen
peroxide scavenging activity. IC-50 value for DPPH method of AOM and AOEt were found to be 5.458ug/ml and
0.0813ug/ml respectively, while for nitric oxide scavenging activity, it was 2.488ug/ml and 2.602ug/ml and for hydrogen
peroxide scavenging activity, it was 165.35ug/ml and 158.89ug/ml respectively. AOM showed good antioxidant activity as
compared to AOEt.
